<< LEE JUST MISSES FIELD BY LESS THAN A BLINK OF AN EYE
>>
SONOMA, Calif. (August 1, 2006) -- For the first time since taking the reins of the Slammers Ultimate Milk Chevy Cobalt, Pro Stock driver Tommy Lee failed to qualify for an NHRA national event.
The Slammers Ultimate Milk team went to extreme measures in an effort to get their Chevy Cobalt into the program, changing "everything but the color of the car" for Saturday's final two runs at this weekend's FRAM Autolite Nationals in Sonoma, Calif.
The changes helped send Lee on his quickest pass of the weekend with a 6.699 in Saturday's final qualifying session. Unfortunately the run was just .006 seconds short of making the 16-car field, placing Lee no. 18 out of the 23 Pro Stock cars in attendance.
"This whole western swing [the three race back-to-back stretch in July] has been a rough one," Lee said. "We have been headed in the right direction performance wise, and now the car feels better than it has in awhile, but we still are not where we want to be.
"Now with a break in the schedule, we can focus on sorting everything out. We are planning on a lot of testing between now and Brainerd to get our car running like it should."
Team owner Victor Cagnazzi echoed Lee's statements.
"We made progress, just not enough," Cagnazzi said. "I'm proud of the work this crew has been doing in spite of the DNQ. The effort being put forth is second to none, and it is only a matter of time until we resolve what is going on with the car. There is too much talent on this team
not to."
